What is a Grocery License in Dubai?
A grocery license in Dubai is an official commercial trade license required to legally operate a retail food store in the city. This license permits you to sell everyday consumer goods, such as packaged food items, beverages, toiletries, and household essentials, directly to the public.
Depending on your investment budget and business plan, this commercial license covers multiple retail formats:
- Traditional Baqalas: Small, local neighborhood grocery stores following standardized city branding.
- Mini Marts: Mid-sized retail outlets offering a wider variety of fast-moving consumer goods.
- Supermarkets: Full-scale retail operations featuring expanded product departments and dedicated storage spaces.
The Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) issues the grocery trade license under specific activity codes, such as Code 471100 (Supermarket) or Code 521103 (Grocery). The license allows only approved retail trading activities and does not permit wholesale trade or the sale of restricted items like medicines or unapproved cosmetics.
It remains valid for one year and requires annual renewal along with a valid commercial tenancy contract (Ejari).
